London - the quintessential metropolitan city

Central London is the place which most tourists see. It is
home to West End where there are numerous theatres,
shopping malls, watering holes, dining places etc. Located
in the same area are Westminster with its Royal palaces,
the Royal Borough of Kensington and Hyde Park- where all
kinds of cultural and political groups congregate. Globe
Theatre is also located here and so is Piccadilly Circus
which is considered one of the busiest streets in the
world! Tower Bridge with its two equal leaves or bascules
is one of the most endearing attractions of the city. These
leaves rise up to 80 degrees to let the river traffic pass

East End is another popular suburb. East End houses
immigrants from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean Islands and
other European countries. The population in East End is
mostly working class. All these diverse cultures make
London truly metropolitan.

There are five airports in London. Of these Heathrow is the
main international airport. It is one of the busiest
airports in the world. Traveling from London to Paris has
become easy after the opening of the Channel-Tunnel for
traffic. The double-decker is the trade mark of London and
it lends charm to the downtown London. London has one of
the busiest suburban, underground train network known as
the 'tube'. It also qualifies as the finest underground
train network

As far as football is concerned, this country of soccer
lovers has eleven professional football clubs in London
city. Wembley stadium has played host to a number of
international soccer tournaments. The ground at Lords is
regarded as the Mecca of Cricket. Wimbledon is a famous
tennis tournament and it is hosted by All England Lawn
Tennis and Croquet Clubs. It is one of the most popular
tennis events in the world.

Marks and Spencer~s is one of the most famous retail shops
and its head quarters are located in London. Saville-Row is
the most famous street in the world where they stitch
suits. It is in London. It is from Fleet Street that most
of the broadsheets operate from. It is the capital of
journalism in the UK.

Among the performers, the famous London Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are in
London. Of the more than 30 theatres in London many are
located in the West End area.

The National Theatre and the Globe Theatre are very famous.
The Royal Shakespeare Company performs regularly in London.
The British Museum is famous for the antiques. The
Victorian and Albert Museums are very famous with tourists.
Madame Tussaud~s is a very famous museum that has wax
models of celebrities from all over the world. Christie~s
is a famous auction house. As a city London is a wonderful
experience. No wonder, it continues to attract tourists and
settlers from all over the world.
